In the meantime, my work in the construction trades consumed me so much so that I was also missing much precious time with my young children and wife due to long hours and travel requirements. The road to finding honest and affordable help, with the expertise to complete projects in a high quality and sustainable fashion, was riddled with challenges, from scam artists charging my grandmother unrealistic rates and never completing the repairs, to shoddy craftsmanship and even contractors stealing my grandma’s personal possessions. My position as a construction superintendent prevented me from offering any additional availability so I sought to hire a reliable handyman. One month a summer would no longer fit the bill for the minor and major home maintenance she needed. When my grandfather passed, my grandmother was tender both in heart and her physical state which left her home in great need of maintenance. My grandparents home was filled with so many special memories, so it was devastating for me, with each progressing summer, to see it begin to deteriorate with their age. Throughout my boyhood and adolescence, I became their resident handyman.Įven though by adulthood I had moved states, for many years, I dedicated a month every summer to return to help my grandparents with projects and upkeep around the house. My favorite classroom was his garage where we spent countless hours tinkering and repairing anything and everything. I was fortunate to have a grandfather who took time to teach me to study the way things work and to observe craftsmanship in everything around me. As a young boy, I spent most of my time at my grandparent's house.
